HOW ABOUT THE ROADS IN NAMIBIA?
2. Infrastructure & Daily Life
-
It depends: roads between Windhoek and Swakopmund are good. Important: Most of the country is made up of gravel roads: Attention: These gravel "roads" may have potholes or pass through dry or wet riverbeds (depending on the rainfall the last days)
-
The distances between cities are long, because you can only drive slow about 60-80 km/h due to gravel road conditions. Better to fly with small aircrafts - which is great fun.

Internet is available but not always as fast or cheap as in Europe.

IS NAMIBIA A SAFE PLACE?
5. Safety
Namibia is considered as one of the safest countries in Southern Africa.
-
It depends to some extend on the cities or areas. Behavior in Windhoek is different from, say, Swakopmund. Swakopmund is very safe and easy going. On the Atlantic coast you can basically get around just like in Europe
-
Petty crime exists, more in Windhoek and some cities
-
Rural areas are generally very safe: In the countryside you have nothing to worry about
-
Security precautions are recommended (as anywhere)
Generally spoken, Namibia is way safer than South Africa and you can go for a walk almost everywhere. In any case, we will provide you with all behavior guidelines. It may take a few days, but you’ll quickly feel very comfortable. It's also a good preparation and a kind gesture to always have some cash on hand to tip the parking attendant.
CAN I GET A GOOD MEDICAL CARE?
6. Healthcare System
Namibia has:
-
Good private hospitals (especially in Windhoek)
-
More limited facilities in rural areas
We recommend to use private medical insurance.
Medical care in Namibia is generally very good and of a high standard. However, hospitals and doctors are mainly located in larger cities such as Windhoek or Swakopmund. In the event of an accident in a remote area, helicopters are usually used, as the distances are too great for ambulances.

Hence, we strongly recommend to use high quality sun protection, long sleeves and stay out of the sun (in summer) at midday (11-16h). The UV index can get up to 16 (for comparison: In Europe, a value of 9 is considered already as the maximum).

Hot summers (October–April): 23°C (Swakopmund) up to 38°C or more in desert areas. Usually it's about 30-35°C. Although it usually rains here a lot, you almost always have decent dry periods during the day. The rain is usually caused by thunderstorms. What you to need to know about thunderstorms, you can find out from us (aviation experts).

9. Insurance
If you’re moving to or traveling in Namibia, we recommend the following insurances:
1. Health Insurance
-
Private health care is required for almost any visa or permit
-
Make sure your insurance covers:
-
Hospital stays
-
Emergency evacuation (especially from remote areas)
-
Outpatient treatment
-
-
Consider international health insurance if you want coverage in multiple countries.
2. Travel / Trip Insurance
-
Covers lost luggage, trip cancellations, or delays.
-
Useful if you plan road trips or safaris in remote regions.
3. Car Insurance
-
If you drive in Namibia, comprehensive or third-party insurance is essential.
-
Gravel roads and wildlife crossings can lead to accidents.
-
Check whether off-road or 4x4 coverage is included.
4. Property / Home Insurance
-
Protects your home or rental property against fire, theft, or natural events.
-
Security systems are common, but insurance adds extra safety.
5. Liability Insurance
-
Personal liability insurance covers accidents where you might damage someone else’s property or cause injury.
Because Namibia has vast rural areas and long distances between towns, emergency evacuation coverage (by helicopter or plane) is highly recommended.
